we just took part in the un-american activity of looking for a decent, basic quilt cover in a good color or print at the toxic nightmare of short pump. the juxtaposition of supposed "green" whole foods in front of the bad movie set named short pump village is especially troubling to me. just to drive the whole thing home, the comme des garcons line for h & m isn't coming to short pump. commerce 1, malinoski caskey family 0. and those giant strollers with cupholders full of sugar and fried stuff, parked in the middle of the bathroom so nobody else can get by. oh the humanity.

this is the mexican wool tourist jacket i bought in hastings minnesota at a thrift store in 1982 that started my obsession with wool felt. it has been an inspiration for a perry ellis group i designed in the late 80s as well as the direct ancestor to my current lupilu work.

it's the jumpsuit again so I will have to find a new way to show it.
maybe just the back. so if you already hate it, sorry, soon it will go on a mannequin
in a show and it will be out of rotation for a few.

august 13th

it's my 46th birthday.
whee!
i am wearing a dress i designed the print for when i was at urban outfitters.
a day at the beach, kite flying, silly pools, ocean splashing, bike riding and more.

going to the beach for two days, yippee.

i rubbed the pattern off a favorite ventilo dress i bought in paris in 2000.
i have the word ortolans floating through my mind. gross yet nice,
are they crunchy?

ready for this,
official jumpsuit number one, titled; doing things with lulu.
notice the features, two commodious cargo pockets, two long cargo pockets,
three small treasure pockets and a removable snap on back pack.
the print is made up of lulu drawings, scanned and created as a repeat then
printed on cotton twill. lulu has a matching one with her sketches in bright colors
on white.

a silver bracelet from morocco, i used to wear armfuls of them
back in my exotic phase of 1989.
i have since sold all but one.

almost two months! blessed rain all day today to sustain the tomatoes and veg.
the skirt, a denim skirt from levi's engineered line, bought new from need supply
in 1998. the back is pleated and fuller, but you can't tell that! the top from a sale rack at anthropologie from 2000.

july 8th

the look:
a green dress made from 4 yards of rayon knit jersey. stretched out to floor length.
and two bracelets my mom made. fashion. yeah, i am printing some odd and happy
things right now which will become garments soon, things like wet dog noses and
white cat fur stuck to black clothes.

hey, guess what?
yes it's the prototype jumpsuit. made this spring for the basic pattern and worn today as the antidote to my staring at the closet. today i really despise fashion and the whole system of producing acceptable cladding for the human. meanwhile my five year old leggy daughter is standing in view in an au courant fitted jean that she looks thirteen in, i don't know if i should burn them or be happy for her in her lithe strong youth.

welcome to summer, the visits to the closet are getting longer but there are still many many things which need to be worn. i am making a jumpsuit for myself and lulu this week, we will debut them next week....

a skirt fabricated from a thrift store pair of chino pants and elaborated with pink and orange rick-rack.

today's featured color, purple.
the shirt is from 1990 or 91 when i raced mountain bikes with a gang of 20 (mostly guys) out of philly. three of the riders had sponsorships with yeti bikes, my boyfriend was one. the pants came from the stores on broad street, my husband got them for my b-day in 1999?
so, kind of my street look.

hello, welcome to saturday the 28th of june. these shorts were bought in 1998 and were a regular rotation in my wardrobe when i kayaked four times a week. now they have been delegated to the bottom of a bag. i made the shirt from a vintage knit in 1996. today's activities, nature walk, farmers market, pulling weeds, pool.

the look of the day is a black skirt made in 2000 out of found fabric and a black tee shirt. i don't know where the tee came from. hot, 93 degrees. working on studio projects all day.

june 24th

summer summer summer, it's getting harder to face the rack and drawer in the am, the combinations are narrowing a bit. i have to save some good looks for a fashion/work trip to las vegas. or...take all those 50+ cotton tees of varying hues and fits and create something new from them. i really think i will have to make one reject re-make, the tee shirts i keep pulling on which are just too small, the misbegotten skirt, etc.
the look for today is a pair of red pants made from my favorite pattern in 2000. the tee shirt has been around since 2001. pink dansko sandals.

i cannot believe it is nearly the end of june. the day is clear and warm, we had a great real heavy rain last night. now were picking scraps of water balloons out of the yard and thinking about going to a dog show. today i am sporting a cotton tee shirt, bought in ? 2001? and a cotton asymetric skirt with hand stitched details which i bought at the thrift store in 2000.

we had a great housewarming party today, thanks to everyone for filling our house with love and laughter. this frock is from urban outfitters dresses line, ecote. i designed the print from a vintage fabric and the style, we sold it in our line in maybe 1990. black leggings....

i can't believe it's june 15th. this skirt came from h & m in 2000 and the tank from gap in 1999.
i spent three hours gardening this am, now some design work then a birthday party for a five year old friend. multi-utile

june 14th

it's really summer now isn't it? this tee shirt is a target special circa 2007. the pants were made in chengdu china for me in the summer of 1995 when i spent two months working on an art project there. the tailor had a little shop in an old hutong along the river, next to the lassi and frites shop and the traffic hotel. all these wonderful places are probably gone now. the fabric is hand batiked swans. i will be saving and re-making....the pants did serve me wonderfully during pregnancy!

the look today is a study in pink. pink trousers from banana republic, bought in 1998 and dyed pink in about 2002. the top is lightweight linen, i made it in 2006.

june 12th, ONE MONTH!

one month down and i still have plenty of hot weather clothes. i don't think it will get really ugly until those hot days in august or september. this top is from arlequin inc in the year 1987. i started as their designer during my junior year at parsons in nyc and it's one of the few items i still have. it had long sleeves which i removed about 4 years ago. the skirt is a target rayon blend knit one.

the look of the day is a printed tee shirt which was designed by my husband for the 1999 shockoe tomato. the pants were purchased in 2001 and are printed cotton.

still very very hot! i am wearing a button front cotton knit tee that was one of my dad's. when we cleaned out his closets we found maybe 50 of these cotton knit italian polo shirts. this one was my fave. the shorts are from old navy last spring.

june 8th

today starts with unforgiving temperatures. here is an orange tank i made five years ago and a silk chiffon asymetric skirt bought in 2001 on sale at saks outlet. crocs because i was watering all morning and doing useful things like cutting dog hair. why a silk chiffon skirt for such tasks? because at 3pm we have a tea party to attend and i need to dress for the day. my husband wonders why i talk about what tasks i do, i think that it's important to notice why we dress for certain events or tasks and how that changes our perception of who we are in our other mundane tasks.

a late post, we had to get my husbands hand stitched up. bit of a shop accident but all is well.
today's look is a vintage red printed gingham dress which anda lewis added some felt and zig-zag stitched flowers to. not quite a housedress, i tied a polka dot scarf about my waist.

today i am wearing: a white tee shirt with a black screen print given to me by my friend dima. the designer of the image is karl grandin, it's a composition of hundreds of animal logos and mascots.
the pants are from 2002, black cotton bought when i was pregnant.

june 4

june 4th and it's 90 degrees here in lovely richmond va. yes my 5 year old does seem to shoot a very foreshortened photo but alas, i am a 45 year old medium height healthily round sort so no amount of styling will ever produce a "fashionably" sized me. maybe i'll get her a cinderblock to stand on in our outdoor photo studio. this is a pair of linen culotte pants made 5 years ago, i liked a black pair i bought so i knocked them off. the top is yet another $5 top from target, dark olivey green.

june 3rd

summer is here and the possible combinations are still nearly endless! this top was bought at target on sale 1.5 years ago. the skirt also is a target purchase, two springs back. neither has been worn much...like many of my clothes.
does anyone have any opinions about how many clothes it is reasonable for one person to own? if i have 40 sweaters should i cut it in half to 20 sweaters. or should i make a lifelong project out of it, keep it all and never buy an article of clothing again?

june 1st

hey, it's a new month. today was a real summer day which for us is hot! this dress is a vintage dress from a friend who gave me her collection of vested gentress smocks. the company made these preppy screen prints in pennsylvania. this one features frogs. since i have started this project i have made one trip to target with my family. it was really clear to me that the whole retail set-up is designed to get me to purchase something easily and cheaply. i know this because it has been my business of 20 years but it really sinks in when you go off retail. over the past few years it has been increasingly difficult for me to purchase clothes. every time i buy a sweater my husband and i wonder who has paid with their health for my cheap top.

yikes, the last day of may and it is in the mid nineties, hot hot hot. today, a pair of short pants from the gap, bought 2 years ago. a citron jersey tee...i love the color. today's picture by a short 5 year old so it's foreshortened.

today i am sporting a henley cotton top from h & m that i bought two years ago. i made the pants about 4 years ago from one of my favorite patterns. my photo has been taken each day by either my husband or my five year old. each has a slightly different aesthetic.

todays clothes are: a nylon woven paisley blouse which i found at the bells road flea market in 1999. i remember seeing a nice printed fabric sleeve and pulling the object from an abject pile of old clothes. the jeans are from the gap, bought in 2006. another story from the flea markets,
as a designer of clothes you always see something you designed come around, sometimes good, sometimes bad. at the same flea market, i once came upon a dress i once owned. it was a silk brocade gown which my stepmom made and i shortened into a mini dress in 1990. i knew it immediately since it was handmade and unique. i was so tempted to re-buy it but decided to let it keep cycling, who knows, maybe i will see it again.

may 28th

here's a look that's sure to please (not), if you wish you can comment like no to the look but save the pants, tops etc....
so, the pants are cotton sateen, made about 6 years ago from a basic pattern i made. the top is a cotton raschel knit from the store dosa in soho, bought in 1989 or 1990 when i was a designer at urban outfitters. the look would have been sleeker had it been warmer but the slight chill of the day brought out a sweater i/o a fitted tee.

hot today, and were still cleaning out our old house. the look of the day is a pair of linen palazzo pants bought at anthropologie in 2001 and an olive tee shirt. dansko sandals. that's it!

another day of work! my favorite jeans from gap, 6 years old. a tee shirt with an image of an ed gross painting. beware, tee shirt weeks coming up, gotta get through the inventory while trying to keep some more appealing clothes for the days which require appeal.

may 25th

my second favorite overalls, oshkosh bought in mt vernon iowa at a small menswear store in maybe 1999???. red tee shirt which i bought in 2003 at target. we cleaned out and moved truckloads of stuff today, hence, overalls. i also have another pair and i do wear them for mowing lawns and gardening.

anyone notice i am a day off? it is the 24th not the 23rd, and i can't edit some things, oh well. last day at the beach and were driving home in a bit. today i am wearing a brown and grey microfiber dress i made last spring, leggings and, yes, brown shoes again.

may 22

today's look is a pair of pink cotton trousers from old navy, maybe 2003? the shirt is an asymetric black cotton tee shirt. we visited the eastern shore and wandered around cape charles. a lovely bright day.

may 21

it's a lovely day, 75 degrees and sunny. we'll ride bikes today and go to the beach. maybe we'll even get a snow cone. this top came from H & M last summer, leggings from target. how to make sustainable clothes and art? at the beach house there is a bowl of wax fruit, circa 1970 i would say. i am really drawn to this collection of pears, apples and grapes. john suggested i make wax clothes, not a bad idea as i could melt them down into candles. meanwhile, i am thinking about what would happen if we had to source our fabric locally, who still makes a textile within 500 miles of richmond, va in a quantity which can be sold?

may 20th

the look of the day is: a black tee shirt from old navy with a x-large bright green tee shirt worn as a skirt. the neck becomes the waist. i am also thinking of taking a bunch of the tee shirts and making them into something else.

may 19th

here we are at the beach! it's rain and sun and thunderstorms and sun again. we rode bikes 118 blocks and along the boardwalk, walked on the beach, read on the beach and just beat a thunderstorm back. this shirt was bought 5-6 years ago at the phoenix and the pants 8 years ago at need supply. the shirt was originally ivory and i dyed it a lovely orange.

may 18th

an early post. this shirt came from the thrift store last year. the pants are eileen fisher cotton pants bought on sale 4 years ago for a trip to vietnam.

may 18, sunday

today we had a yard sale, windy and sunny all am with rain showing up around 1pm. then we
dropped books etc off at the thrift store and headed downtown to a city event, broad appetit to hear joel salatin speak. back home, getting ready for the beach.....wearing:
blue pants from target bought 8 months ago and a top/dress from same bought 2 years ago.
ues, it's the brown shoes again. some notes on how the blog will go when i am on vacation. i will still be posting and wearing within the system i have committed to. however, bathing suits are exempt from posting as is one beach coverup so i can only change out of the look of the day if i switch to the beach coverup and suit. another note, among my rules was the concept of a safety garment. i have made the first jumpsuit as a prototype and will be using this as my one outfit which i can change into if any of the following types of things happen: five year old spills ice cream on me, i get soaked in downpour, seat of trouser splits out, etc. i also have only one outerwear garment for the week, an orange rain slicker. so, one week down! 40 to go !

may 17th

two graduations to attend in one day so this post is late! here's a tunic dress in poly chiffon from H & M. purchased last summer or fall i think. leggings and the ubuquitous brown shoes.
now time to feed the family and then off to a retirement party for a colleague at VCU. it's been an end of the year graduation triple play!

may 16th

it will be raining on and off all day, about 70 degrees. i have to go to a fashion event tonight so i feel the day calls for a dress. i made this dress in 1995 or 96. the skirt is all mens silk ties from the 1940's. i bought the ties (sewn together already!) on a 50 mile road bike ride in eastern wisconsin in 1994 when i stopped to stretch my legs and stuffed it in my jersey pocket. i added a linen bodice and here it is. the fabric for the bodice came from perry ellis where i was the designer of the america line in 1988-89. picture will be posted at around 2pm.

may 15th

this pair of culottes came from urban outfitters about 3 years ago. the shirt i made 4 years ago from a piece of vintage fabric. sandals with socks, sorry, at 45 with foot surgeries and old injuries i don't do fashion shoes.

this skirt came from a thrift store about 4 years ago, a nice cotton vintage print. basic boxy tee shirt and leggings. it's warm, 75 degrees and lovely, did housework, studio duties and went to the botanical garden. ciao.

may 13th, 70 degrees

it's fresh and sunny today and instead of gravitating to my usual wardrobe I went for a knit wool skirt (clearance, banana republic two-three years ago) and a ubiquitous pledge drive tee-shirt, leggings and the usual shoes. i gardened for two hours this morning and hope to be outside all day, maybe a bike ride with lulu later. photo will post at around 2pm.

the first day, may 12th 2008

today is 50 degrees with heavy wind, rain and generally fresh conditions. starting the line-up for the project are some unremarkable but functional clothes, a beige v-neck cashmere sweater that belonged to my daddy and a pair of wool knit eileen fisher pants bought second hand about 2 years ago. shoes and accessories will be repeated along with outerwear (until we get to winter coat season!) you won't be seeing this sweater again until march, yikes.

some tee shirts

why does every event have to have a tee shirt? is this why i have over 40 of these image laden things? i am thinking about what else i can do with them, maybe there will be a tee shirt week mid-summer and i can wear one as a skort and one regular. plus, i'm not a tee shirt girl, i don't have a willowy shape, more like a cheese cube. i am wishing i hadn't kept so much stuff, some of it is going to be pretty sorry, especially since my storage method is to stuff everything in big black bags in the attic and i refuse to press except for special occasions.

more tangents

today i am thinking about the idea of the safety garment. because i often make garment based artwork i am considering making 5 jumpsuits/jumpers which can always be worn for professional appearances or chores. the line-up would look something like this, 1 look for professional functions, 1 look for gardening and working outside (i do alot of this) 1 look for hanging out with 5 year olds at various venues, 1 look for my studio activities, one look for those days when morale is low and only comfort will do. each piece would have specific built in features that suit the function. pictures will start coming on monday! for now i think i will post my picture somewhere here. also, links to quirk, lupilu and vcu fashion.

aesthetic to ascetic is my journal of my attempt to come to terms with my own fashion consumption.
as a designer/educator for over 20 years i have amassed and given away thousands of pieces of clothing. as i try to lessen my impact with food and consumer choices in this commercial world, i am constantly fighting my own ball and chain of a wardrobe. starting on may 12th i will wear each item currently in my possession once before any garment can be re-worn. i am working on an excel document with garment tallies and an elaborate set of criteria for the project. my preliminary count looks like i can make it 306 days without repeating a dress, sweater, top or fitted jacket. skirts and pants will be worn once then will be allowed to re-enter the rotation since i have considerably fewer of these items. more to follow on the guidelines. because my life includes professional engagements, i may be allowed a limited number of "safety" garments. each day i will post a photo of the look of the day. at the end of each day garments will be tagged and stored for exhibition, re-fashioning and sale/giveaway.
